"Son, I see God at work in you."
That is where we are at with Isaac. He says he remembers praying "the prayer" on the way to visit Grammy Bernie over a year ago. He understands that he is a sinner and the wages of sin is death (and has the Scripture memorized to back it up). He knows that he can never be good enough to earn a spot in heaven. He know that Jesus, God's son (yet having the full authority of God in the flesh) came to die on the cross to pay the penalty for his sin. He knows that once you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord that you'll be saved. He also knows that after that, the Holy Spirit (yes, fully God too) is alive and it work in those who believe...and the result will be "fruit"...a life that is overflowing with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control...looking more like Jesus every day.
So we are at this place that many Christian parents of young children come to. Do we assure him of his salvation and move on? Do we continue to share the gospel with him, just in case? We do know that if he is saved by grace through faith in Jesus, nothing can separate him from that love. He cannot lose his salvation. At the same time, we don't know if his confession of faith is genuine. God knows; time will show us.
We do see fruit. We tell him that we see God at work in his life. We give God glory for Isaac's achievements and tell him when choices he makes either reflect a life lived for the Lord or is contrary to what Christ would do or instructs us to do in His word.
Today, after church, the kids and I talked about what we learned and make lunch together. After lunch, Isaac requested that I make the kids some fresh squeezed OJ. I did, and it was so delicious because the oranges were so sweet. Just before Isaac took his last sip (totally unprovoked), he bowed his head and prayed, "Jesus, Thank You for this wonderful lunch and for my family. Thank You for giving my mom the skills to make this yummy orange juice. Thank You for making the seeds to grow these oranges. Thank you for this great day."
Abigail said, "That was a good prayer."
My sensors went up, desperately not wanting my son to have the pride of a Pharisee, responded (as I often do), "Yes, it was a great prayer. And who is responsible for that?"
"God," both kids reply.
"Yes son, I see God at work in you."
That is where we are at. We are not ready to allow him to take communion or to be baptised. One thing we know for sure...we do see God at work in his heart and his life. For that, we praise Him!!
