Memorial Day, 2012

Memorial Day. Contrary to popular opinion, it is not a day set aside to shop sales and host a BBQ. Those things are nice, but they are not the purpose set aside for the day. We are purposeful, as a family, to honor the meaning of “Memorial Day.”
Even though Chris has to work, we spend the morning honoring and education our kids somehow about the soldiers meant to be memorialized. This year we went to the Oregon Vietnam Living Memorial. We have been there before, but never on Memorial Day itself. It is a circular path upward with progressive monuments featuring names and facts of the war itself and things happening “at home” in Oregon during the same time periods. We read sections engraved in the stone as people took turns reading the 800+ names of Oregonian soldiers represented there. Sobering.

As tears welled, the names were resonating in the silence. The men decorated with pins, vet hats and POW emblems lined the path. They stood listening, some stoic, some smiling with their comrades, some wiping away the tears. They were there. They have tangible memories, fears, and pains of the war that ended before we were born. They lived the history we read about in books. They have the scars. They were the ones who knew the Americans fighting and dying, at one point, at the rate of 1000 per month. They were the ones who fought while others at home lived licentiously protesting with peace signs. They were the ones who were denied respect due a soldier upon returning home.

I tried to say, “Thank you,” to those I could. The words seemed trivial though they were heartfelt. I asked one vet if he knew any of the guys represented by the names on the wall. He said he didn’t. He pointed to the man next to him and quietly said, “His brother’s here.” Every name is someone’s family. This war, unlike older wars, still has so many living that are affected every day. They still suffer and grieve. The pictures that many carry so vividly in their minds are, how I explained to Isaac, like having nightmares after watching a scary movie…only theirs was something they really saw.

As we walked back to out car (in the parking lot shared with the Oregon Zoo), there was a couple who were criticizing the behavior of the American troops in Vietnam. Amidst the pain, there are still the critics who cannot (or will not) refrain from adding their two cents…even for one day. As we saw the crowds gathered in line for the zoo, it was a further picture of how life goes on. Only the distance of a paved parking lot separated the worlds of grieving soldiers and those who are happily enjoying a “day off.” It was a microcosm of how we go about our every day lives while brave troops, even today, fight on our behalf. Though any good soldier will tell you that they fight to keep the freedoms for Americans to speak their mind and enjoy a safe day at the zoo, it is still right that we remember this day for the purpose for which is was set aside.

Thank a vet. Pray for families who still grieve. Sympathize for soldiers who still struggle with trauma caused by what they saw and suffered. Praise God for the brave men and women who are willing to lay down their lives so that we’d have the freedom to enjoy Memorial Day however we choose to spend it.

Tillamook Forest

After a day outdoors in the rain, it was great to be able to get outside in the sunshine. We have never been to the Tillamook Forest Center (which is surprising because it is FREE). It was beautifully maintained and had lots for the kids to do and learn, considering that it's pretty small. We didn't spend much time there because we wanted to get outside, but we'll go back for sure. There are 20+ miles of hiking trails, bridges, river access, and overnight camping that we plan to experience the next time we visit.

My handsome boys

Throwing rocks in the river never gets old...no matter how old you are
We live here!!! Are you kidding me?!?! Such beauty and memories to be made on Dad's day off. :)

Chris easily threw his rocks all the way across

She LOVED her walking stick!
Drying off toes in the sunshine

It got a little too hot for Chris. He pretended he was foreign and rolled up his jeans.

A big hike deserves some cheese!

Kinder Field Trip

Gramma watched Abigail while Chris and I joined Isaac and his class at Camp Tilikum. It was a fun outdoor adventure with lots of happy (and wet) moms, dads, kids, and teachers. Highlights included fishing, boating, high ropes walking, hiking, and salamanders.

It stuck me how many kids don't experience nature the way our family does, even though we so many opportunities all around us...seriously, we live in Oregon. One of the kindergarten teachers kept enthusiastically saying, "Isn't this amazing for the kids to experience this?!?" For many of the students, it was a first (or one of a very few) for them to explore God's creation in such a tangible way.

Learning about school in the "old days"

Boys lost to the girls in the tug (ratio of boys to girls 7 to 18)

Mrs. Meyer's class

Brave boys

"Go Isaac Go!!!"

Chris worked the "tree house" station for over 100 kinders...his voice was tired at the end of the day from cheering

First salamander

Isaac, Mom (the rower) and buddy Walker

Rainy Boat Ride
So happy that we get to participate in Isaac's class together
I am thankful that this day added to a love for the outdoors that we have already instilled in Isaac. I am thankful to see him educating other kids on the seeds hiding on the backs of the fern leaves and showing them the spittle bugs hiding in their little bubbles. It was his first time holding a salamander. That was really cool. That just goes to show, there is always more to know, learn, build and grow.

Spring to the Beach

They boys dug a hole..."to the middle of the earth"

Awesome Costco kite

She is so fun. Love her!

Abigail and Ollie (they'll be in kindergarten together before we know it).
It was "warm" at the coast, so another friend with a son in Isaac's class zipped to the beach after school on a Monday (the perk of kindergarten being out at 10:30 a.m.).

Family Day Date in the City

No, we didn't actually let them take a drink...this was the closest they got. :)

We love being so close to such a visitable city. When we were in So Cal, I would never think of going into the city "just because." Here, I do. Lunch in the backpack, a camera and unlimited Max train rides in downtown Portland make a great day. I even splurged and used a coupon for a free kid's Ben and Jerry's ice cream to share...I know, big spenders...that's how the Korens roll. :)

Fun Day, Plans Change...on the "Fly"

Yummy Hummus

Native American Dancers

Nature Walk. Bird Watching

Painting Binoculars

Isaac was educating the girl about ants (he studied them this year in class)

Purple Flowers

"AAHHHH!! There are ants climbing on my arm!!!!"

Bird Lady

First time on a real seesaw

Count on Mom to find the coolest stuff (free). We have crafted, saw a live falcon and owl, dissected owl barf, watched a "Native American" (their t-shirts said Indian, but whatever) group dance, made bird feeders, wooden necklaces, and went on a guided bird watching hike...all on the "fly" because National Train Day was canceled/not hosted in Portland this year. I am thankful for a semi-smart phone that allowed me to look up the Portland Metro Parent Mag to find a fun event, and Telenav to get me there without getting lost,
